Artist

Tara Fallon

Tara Fallon is a documentary and fine art photographer drawn to unguarded moments, the emotional life of domestic spaces, and the ways light alters familiar surroundings. Working in color and black and white, she is especially drawn to film and Leica cameras, valuing the grain, unpredictability, and imperfections of the medium. She photographs family life, strangers, movement, and quiet details that might otherwise be overlooked. Her images move between observation and construction, intimacy and distance.

Tara earned a BFA in Photography from Parsons School of Design in 2011. Early in her career, she interned with Ryan McGinley, supporting image editing, model casting, archival work, and shoot preparation. Her experience also includes assisting George Pitts and Chris Twomey, internships at TAR Magazine and Foley Gallery, and assignments for Worcester Magazine and BizBash. At BizBash, she worked with Feature Shoot founder Alison Zavos, helping identify some of the first photographers presented on the site.

Tara's photographs have appeared in Time Out New York, BizBash, Worcester Magazine, Feature Shoot, and Lifelounge. Exhibitions include Milk Gallery, Calumet Gallery, the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center, and Lake Johnson.

Tara earned an MSW from the University of Melbourne in 2013. Her combined practice in photography and social work led her to create Photovoice in 2015 at The Living Room, a homeless drop in shelter in Melbourne. The social work program later became a research project with the University of Melbourne.

Narratives of Homelessness

Tara created Narratives of Homelessness: A Pathway to Recovery through her social work practice at The Living Room. Over fifteen weeks she designed and taught photography classes. Between sessions, participants experiencing homelessness made photographs of their own lives and surroundings, then chose what, if anything, they wanted to share and discuss.

Living so much of their lives in public space, the participants saw Melbourne from perspectives unfamiliar to Tara: its overlooked corners, rhythms, shelter, and moments of connection. Many were exceptionally talented image makers. Tara entered as a teacher, but the exchange was reciprocal and humbling. Participants retained control of their images and their own narratives of homelessness. The program later became a University of Melbourne research project and culminated in a gallery exhibition. It remains one of the most meaningful experiences of Tara's photography and social work practice.
